WHAT is COACHING?
Coaching is a collaborative, facilitative process that enables you to acquire new skills and knowledge, to improve existing skills, and to enhance your personal growth.
A common misconception of coaching is that “coaches tell people what to do, or give advice”. But in fact inside our coach-client relationship we are equals working collaboratively. We both share the responsibility for achieving the desired results and outcomes.
Take, for example, the partnership between a sports coach and their athlete. I can’t play the game for you, but I can support you to bring out your best performance through guidance and feedback.
COACHING VS THERAPY?
Experiencing a positive change is a purpose that both coaching and therapy share but the process, pace, client state and techniques differ between the two.
Coaching’s focus on future-oriented goal achievement, client empowerment, and facilitative approach sets it apart from other helping professions. Coaches typically work with individuals who are looking to grow, improve or develop in some way.
Therapy often deals with individuals experiencing mental health challenges or “identifiable dysfunctions”. The therapist is viewed as the one with the answers, in contrast to coaching where coaching clients are experts in their own right. Therapists often use various psychological techniques and may delve into childhood experiences, trauma, or unconscious patterns.
